Betty Lynn Mossman

Betty Lu Lynn Mossman, age 97, died on March 14, 2012 at Hot Springs. Born on September 12, 1914 in Winfield, Kansas to Charles F. Lynn and Lulu Jeanes Lynn, she was summa cum laude graduate from Southwestern College (Winfield) in 1936 and married Hobart F. Mossman the same year. Following 7 years living in a Chicago suburb, they moved to Dallas where her husband was Head of School at Hockaday School; she became active at Highland Park Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of the AAUW, DAR and PEO (a 70 year member). They were members of the Classic Club and Knife and Fork Club. They moved to Long Island where she did graduate work and was a math teacher for 18 years in Great Neck and Glen Head schools. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and the North Shore Hospital Auxiliary in Manhasset. After the Mossmans retired to Bella Vista in 1975, she was active in the Presbyterian Church, PEO, the Garden Club and Andante Club. After a stroke in 2002, she moved to Greenwood Manor in Hot Springs Village and then to The Crossings in Malvern, where she resided when she died. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Charles F. Lynn, Jr., her husband Dr. Hobart F. Mossman (an educator), and her son Stuart Lynn Mossman (luthier of S.L. Mossman Guitars). Her survivors are her daughter Martha Smither and her husband Wilbur of Dallas and Hot Springs Village, two granddaughters, Rebecca Lynn Risinger Marcum and her husband David of Tecumseh, Michigan and Laura Mossman Nicholson and her husband Scott of Sparks, Maryland and seven great grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Her family remembers her as a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who never raised her voice, always gave them wise counsel and had a keen sense of humor. Her friends knew her to be fun, caring, interested and always willing to help. Graveside services will be scheduled at the end of the month in Winfield, Kansas.
